In September 2016, I became aware that a student from Mauritania, a country in west Africa, had been set to attend SVSU in the fall semester but was detained and questioned at the Detroit International Airport and eventually deported because he had an image on his cell phone of a novel titled “Habibi Daeshi,” written by Egyptian author Hager Abd al-Samd.


I wrote this article with Microsoft Word.


Wanting to tell his story to the larger campus community, I reached out to the student, and chatted with him via Facebook Messenger. This article is the result; it’s reached almost 4,500 views on the Vanguard’s and is exemplary of my work as an investigative journalist.
